Lucknow is the capital city of state of Uttar Pradesh. It is on the verge of a major metropolitan city of India and has always been known for its multi-culture and artistic hub of North India.
It is still retaining the architecture of yores of British Empire. It was once the administrative and cultural hub of “Nawabs of Avadh (Oudh)” and is popularly known as ‘The City of Nawabs’. It is also known as the Golden City of the East, Shiraz-i-Hind and The Constantinople of India. This City is characterized by its courtly manners, beautiful gardens, poetry, music, and fine cuisine patronized by the Nawabs of the city.
Lucknow is famous for its ‘Nawabi tehzib’ or mannerism. This is a city that still speaks the language of “aap-janab” and the dictum of “pehle aap” is a part of everyday life for a true Lakhnawi. ‘Aadab’ the Lucknowi salutation has its own sophistication and style. Dress forms though have changed noticeably in the span of a century, yet the beauty and charisma of Chikan – the intricate and delicate hand embroidery, still rules the wardrobe.
Besides its charming architecture, the city is famous for its delicious “Awadhi cuisine”, kebabs and much more. Be it the architectural wonders or the cultural charm, everything is well conserved here, that makes Lucknow “The City of Many Splendors”.
It is also known for its musically soothing evenings, Shaam-E-Awadh. The panorama along the banks of the river Gomti is truly magnificent.
Extending along the banks of the Gomti River, modern Lucknow city is a brilliant blend of the medieval and the modern times having new ultra-tech Malls and super markets popping up all over the city. The METRO Railway Services is a hallmark of cultural extravaganza.
Lucknow was ranked 6th in a list of ten fastest job creating cities in India as per a study conducted by Assocham Placement Pattern study. The economy of Lucknow city was earlier based on the tertiary sector with about majority of the workforce being employed as government servants. Large-scale industrial establishments are low as compared to other north Indian states like New Delhi. Currently the economy is growing with the contributions from more professionals in the fields of IT, Manufacturing and Processing and Medical/Bio-Technology. Business-promoting institutions viz. Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and EDII have a remarkable presence in the city.
Lucknow is also blooming into an upcoming IT hub of North India with various software and IT companies residing in many parts of the city including Gomti Nagar. Tata Consultancy Services has been one of the major companies. Its campus, is the second largest establishment in Uttar Pradesh, as Software/IT park in Lucknow. Also there are many local but noticeable Open Source technology companies like Medma Infomatix. Apart from it, it also boasts some important National and State level headquarters of Sony, Reliance Retail etc. The Govt. has also planned to set up an IT city on a sprawling 100 acre lands in the Chak Ganjaria farms on the Sultanpur Road. The government has already provided SEZ status to the project which is expected to give rise to thousands of job opportunities for the state.
